Amb. Peter Schatzer currently serves as Permant Observer for the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean to the United Nations and other international organizations in Vienna, Austria. Prior to that, Ambassador Schatzer served as Senior Adviser to the Director General at IOM in Geneva.
After studying in Vienna, Austria, and working with national and international NGOs and as a journalist, he joined the UN in 1979 as Information/External Relations Officer for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Geneva. In 1986, he served as Personal Secretary to the President of Austria. Prior to holding that position, he worked worked as Personal Assistant to the Chairman, InterAction Council of Former Heads of Government.
From 1990 to 2003, he held several positions at IOM headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, including Director of the External Relations Department and Senior Regional Adviser for Europe. He joined IOM as Chief of Mission in Rome (1986-1990) and served the organization as Chief of Mission in Amman, Jordan, during the first Gulf crisis and war (1990-1991) and in Berlin/Bonn, Germany (2002-2003) and on humanitarian missions to Rwanda and Serbia/Kosovo.
From 2003 to 2010, he was Director of IOM’s Regional Office for the Mediterranean and Chief of Mission in Italy and Malta, based in Rome. From 2010 to 2012, he held the position of Chief of Staff at IOM headquarters. In 2013, he became the Senior Adviser to the Secretary General of the Parliamentary Assembly for the Mediterranean in Malta. Amb. Schatzer has also contributed to a wide variety of publications and public speaking on migration, population and development issues at numerous occasions including during regular and special UN General Assembly sessions.
